Final Fantasy IX Bullet Review

Overview and Facts:
  • The last Final Fantasy game to be released on PSX
  • The game actually released on PSX after PS2 was released
  • Newer PC and current gen console versions feature upgraded textures and extra functions like: Speed up, Battle Assistance and no encounters

Pros:

  • Probably runs on a Potato
  • Classic fun RPG game elements
  • Active turn based battle system
  • Epic Story
  • Fantastic Skill/Equipment management. Equipment gives you passive abilities that you can learn permanently by grinding AP. Then switch the gear to another party member
  • Makes use of all characters throughout the story
  • Great characters/Great Villains. You just hate those guys!
  •  Best cinematic videos of all PSX games
Cons:
  • Even if the game is great, some people might be discouraged by the game's older style graphics
  • Some times the way forward is pretty clear, but there is no way to track what to do next. If you don't remember the last dialogue you might just get lost and not know what to do
  • It is really easy to miss stuff. Progressing the story too much might lock you out of some things
  • Classic version is split in four different disks
  • Completionist's Nightmare. Excalibur 2 item requires to reach the final boss in 12 hours which makes you skip a whole lot in the game. You just can't have it all in a playthrough
  • No voice acting. While definitely a negative, you can enjoy it at your own pace on mute even outside with ambient noises
  • Equipping different weapons changes the appearance, but equipping different armors doesn't

Neutral:

  • The game is pretty grindy. Some people might find it tedious, but it is perfect for some old school nostalgia
  • No difficulty settings. I love that, but some people don't

Verdict:

One of the classic games that evolved the, already solid, foundation of it's predecessors. A must play for sure. Modern gamers might have a difficult time adjusting, but an emulation device (like the ones from Anbernic or Powkiddy) will make it feel at home.

Personal Score: Positive: 87 (PSX)
Play Time: 90 Hours
